Luminosity classes are related to the light intensity of stars. Within the same spectral class (with the same temperature and color) stars may have different physical characteristics, especially regarding its diameter. Two stars with the same temperature emit the same the same energy per unit area, but if one is much larger, the total energy emitted is also much higher.
